MD Reports a Successful Coyote & Wolf Reduction Program

The Municipal District (MD) of Bonnyville has suspended its Coyote & Wolf Reduction Program after reaching its yearly threshold of $25,000. The number of wolves that were brought in by the public nearly doubled from last year.

The MD holds the program to protect farmer’s livestock and pays residents per animal caucus brought in. Residents receive $75 per wolf and $15 per coyote. In 2015-2016, 1,342 coyotes and 66 wolves were brought in. There has been a smaller number of wolves brought in during the reduction program, mainly because wolves can be crafty and a trickier animal to catch.

Even with only 66 wolves brought in, The MD is pleased with the number of predators stopped and has seen a significantly lower number of attacks to livestock since instating the program, four years ago. The Reduction Program typically ends March 31st, however with the MD reaching its threshold of allotted money the program was cut short by nearly two weeks.
