Sails, Rails & Tails Hits Mega Status

Lakeland Geocachers are elated with the news that their upcoming summer event, Sails, Rails & Tails, has reached Mega Status. Vicky Lefebvre, with Lakeland Geocachers, says the entire region will be showcased during five-day event in July.

Receiving Mega Status from geocaching.com, “is similar to an $11,000 sponsorship. They put this all over the world,” explains Lefebvre who is able to see where in the world, people who have registered are from. “We have more people coming from outside of Alberta than we do from inside the province.” Lefebvre jokes that Albertans are known for their last-minute plans and expects more in-province registrants to come as the entire nears.

Reaching Mega Status means at least 300 people will be attending the five-day event, likely even double those numbers. Lefebvre explains people like herself and her husband register as one name, but there’s two people. Many times families will register as one family name, with multiple people attending. With hundreds of people exploring the region in July, Lefebvre says it’ll be a perfect opportunities for communities to showcase themselves.

“What we’re trying to do is get people to your community,” Lefebvre explains the communities in the area are each distinctive and offer a variety of reasons for geocachers to stick around, “the caches are there, so they’ll come and hopefully they’ll stop in for a bite to eat or to shop at a store.” With so many people coming to the area for the event, Lefebvre expects the economic impact to be huge.

The event starts July 6th with geocachers directed to go the Lindberg Salt Plant, then head west to Fort George Buckingham House, followed by Elk Point and the final destination of the day is Glendon. The next day the treasure hunters will search for caches in and around St. Paul, then Bonnyville, and Muriel Creek Cattle Co. outside of Alexander. From July 8th-10th, Cold Lake will be the hub of activities with geocachers hunting around the Fire Hall, Museum, and Fish Hatchery; there will also be midnight caching.

The Mega Event, Sails, Rails & Tails Mega Event – GC5ZFA4, will be held July 9th. Lefebvre recommends registering on sailsrailstails.com, you can order t-shirts and special edition coins when you register. Registering is your best opportunity to ensure you receive the limited print coin.
