Mayor Sobolewski Expresses Disappointment with 51st Ave Construction

Mayor of Bonnyville, Gene Sobolewski, welcomed local business owners to the Shaw House Tuesday evening for a Meet the Mayor session hosted by the Bonnyville & District Chamber of Commerce. One of the most discussed topics of the evening was the construction on 51st avenue. The Town has expressed their displeasure with the construction late last summer when the project was behind schedule and ultimately did not get finished within the timeline agreed upon. Mayor Sobolewski explains the Town has made steps to improving the project when construction starts up again in the spring.

The project was especially frustrating because it shut down one of the busiest corners in town, north-south on 50th street (the Post Office-TD Bank) and east-west on 51st avenue to 46th street. Many residents did not have access to the front of their homes and were required to use back alleys. Parents and buses travelling to Duclos Elementary school were rerouted and many businesses suffered from their customers not being able to easily access their store fronts.

Construction will resume in the spring, with Mayor and Council taking steps to ensure the problems they faced in 2015 won’t happen again, starting with hiring a new contractor. Tenders on the projects will go out over the next couple months.
