Bonnyville Mounties Face-off Against High School Hockey Stars

On February 9th, the Bonnyville RCMP Detachment will take on Bonnyville’s youth hockey players, Odie’s Challenge Hockey Game. The game, which will feature students and mounties of all skill levels, was created after one of the Bonnyville RCMP Members, Constable Guilbeault, felt there was a need for a better relationship between the Bonnyville RCMP and the youth in Bonnyville, explains Cst. Laura Carroll of the Bonnyville Detachment.

“Cst. Guilbault chose a hockey game, because throughout his career he has connected with students by way of this sport whether it was dropping by a gym class or organizing a lunch hour floor hockey game.” Cst. Carroll says the Detachment has invited all three high schools, in town and their students to participate in the game. Representatives from Ecole Notre Dame High School, Bonnyville Centralized High School and Ecole Des Beaux-Lacs will lace up to take on the mounties.

Members of the RCMP move around the country from posting to posting to serve Canadians.  It is important for Mounties to form strong partnerships with their communities, so that community policing can be achieved.  -Constable Laura Carroll Bonnyville RCMP Detachment

Principals from each of the three high schools in the town of Bonnyville were invited to select, by their own merit, a number of students from each school to participate in this hockey game against the local RCMP Members. Cst. Carroll says this is just one of the many ways Mounties hope to form relationships with the Town’s youths, “Odie’s Challenge, besides incorporating a truly Canadian sport, is not only a way for the Bonnyville Detachment Members to get to know the students outside of the course of their regular duties but also gives the high schools a chance come together in a fun and unique way.”

The Bonnyville RCMP Detachment invites people of all ages in our communities to attend the event to cheer on their favourite Mountie or School. People attending this event are requested to show support for the community by bringing either a non- perishable food item for the Bonnyville Food Bank or a cash donation for Odie which can be dropped off on their way into the arena.   Odie will be on hand to greet children and show his excitement for hockey!

This event is sponsored by Lakelandconnect.net and RE/MAX Bonnyville Realty. The Town of Bonnyville have donated the ice fees for the event.
