MD & Town of Bonnyville Help Fund Atom Hockey Tournament

The Bonnyville Atoms Hockey is looking to bring the provincial tournament to Bonnyville in March. As part of their bid for the tournament the Atoms must show they are able to fund the event. The hockey club approached the MD and Town of Bonnyville, both agreed to match each other’s funding support of $4,250 to make $8500 total raised.

Mayor of Bonnyville Gene Sobolewski explains tournaments of this nature bring in economic spin-off; which’ll benefit the entire region. “It was an easy decision for Council,” says Mayor Sobolewski, who notes that the MD had already agreed to support the tournament. “The MD sent us a letter saying they had supported the tournament,” it was on the MD’s suggestion that the tournament organizers came to the Town for matching funds.

Having the MD and the Town show their support in the way of funding will increase the chances that the Atoms bid to host provincials will be successful. According to Hockey Alberta, once a bid is put together and submitted, the bid applications are then reviewed and compared with Hockey Alberta’s guidelines for hosting. More thorough bids have a higher likelihood of being chosen to host, in the case of multiple applicants.

The money will be given to the team only if the bid is successful.
