The Town & MD of Bonnyville Will Support Cold Lake’s Summer Games Bid
The Municipal District of Bonnyville Council voted in approval of supporting the City of Cold Lake’s bid for hosting the Alberta Summer Games. Reeve for the MD, Ed Rondeau says they are happy to support the bid, “if Cold Lake wants to do this, host the games, it’s something that we have to do as a region. No one community can handle this by themselves.”
Rondeau says the united effort has a lot to do with the vast volunteer force needed to pull off an event such as the Summer Games, “it requires too many volunteers for Cold Lake to do themselves. And Summer Games the volunteer force will be less.” Due in part to summer vacations and residents having other commitments. “You won’t have as many people available as when you did when Bonnyville hosted the 2010 Winter Games,” explains Rondeau.
There’s no monetary commitment in place from the MD as of now, rather this is a show of support, Rondeau explains, “right now, it’s just a letter of support for Cold Lake to put in the bid. There’s no dollar amount decided at this stage of the game.” The Reeve explains the evaluation committee who decides whether a bid is successful or not expects to see surrounding municipalities support in the application, “it’s required as part of the bid, I think it would be difficult for them to get the bid otherwise.”
The Town of Bonnyville also voted in approval to support the bid and will write a letter to be included in Cold Lake’s bid package.
