The Nomination Meeting for Kehewin Chief and Council will be held Monday July 13th. On May 12th, a settlement was reached in Federal Court that Kehewin Cree Nation must hold a new election for tribal council and chief after not allowing off-reserve members to run for office and not providing mail-in ballots for off-reserve members.

Tina Dion, barrister on the case says off-reserve members have rights, same as on reserve members, “we all want to work together, and that’s what this initiates, off-reserve members being seen as full-fledged members, which we are and to have our ability to participate in government too.”

The nomination meeting will be open July 13th from 7-10pm at the Rec Centre in Kehewin. All members of Kehewin will be able to nominate and run for office, including off-reserve members. As per the settlement in May, Dion says the current council and chief are to only rule in emergency circumstances, “such as a flood”, until the new election results are determined in September.
