While reflecting on a lifetime of beautiful memories, the family of Frances “Joey” Jane Kahpeepatow of Big Island Lake Cree Nation, Saskatchewan announces her passing on Monday, October 5, 2026 at the age of 60 years.
Joey found happiness in the simple things in life and especially loved spending time with her family. She enjoyed working on the land and was happiest in the kitchen, where she made sure everyone was well fed and cared for. Summer days spent near the river with her grandchildren brought her great joy and created many cherished memories. October was Joey’s favourite month, and she embraced the season through gardening, hunting, and helping set up the haunted house at the school. Her love of family, the outdoors, and bringing people together will be warmly remembered by all who knew and loved her.
Joey is lovingly survived by her husband of 42 years: Louie Bighead; children: Tammy (David), Steven (Lynette), Andrew, Anthony, Josie, Logan, Megan, Mark; adopted child: Shayden; grandchildren: Drake, Shaylah, Sage, Khaleesi, Becky, John, Winry, Strife, Tayenn, Patrick; sisters: Gloria, Sandi (Moise), Charlotte; Joey will also be missed by her many nieces, nephews, extended family & friends.
Joey is going into the arms of her mother: Mary (1983); father: Daniel (1989); brothers: Leslie (1976), Daniel “Pete” (2023), Clayton (2026).
Wake, Thursday, October 8, 2026 at 12:00 p.m., Chief Napew Memorial School Gymnasium, Big Island Lake Cree Nation, Saskatchewan, leaving Memento Funeral Chapel, Cold Lake, Alberta at 11:00 a.m.
Funeral Service, Friday, October 9, 2026 at 11:00 a.m., Chief Napew Memorial School Gymnasium, Big Island Lake Cree Nation, Saskatchewan with the Band Elders officiating. Pallbearers: Charlie Connor, David Chow, Donald Lewis, Virgil Head, Barry Sandfly, Shane Campbell. Cremation to follow.
