Matthew “Matty” Banks
March 6, 1966 ~ September 12, 202660 Years Old
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Matthew Harley Banks, also knows as Matt or Matty, on September 12, 2026, at the age of 60.
Matt was Born on March 6, 1966 in Victoria, BC, where he resided alongside his sisters Heather, Bree, Rhonda and his brother Malcom.
He had a life that most of us could not imagine, adventures most would never dare, but lived fiercely and passionately.
Matt loved camping, trail riding and of course he would never pass up hunting season. His #1 passion was hunting. Whether it be in the bush, in the truck, at “Camp Nunya”, if someone was going hunting, he was there!
In 1987 Matt got married and shortly after had his first daughter Nicole.
In 1989 Matt moved forward and started a family where he became a step dad to two children, Julie and Thomas. He took them under his wing and raised them as his own, creating many memories and experiences in the outdoors.
Matt met Nichole in 2002, and decided to get married and start a family. He became a part of the Christian faith, moved to Fort Saskatchewan, where they soon had Janelle in 2005 and Vanessa in 2007. Matt and Nichole made lots of great friends and became apart of the community raising their two beautiful girls.
In 2020, Matt’s health got a hold of him, where he ended up in the hospital for several months, there he had underwent open heart surgery and unfortunately a leg amputation which turned his life around, where he was unable to do the things that he loved to do. Due to his circumstances, it was decided that he then move to High River, AB where his daughter Nicole (Travis) lived. After 5 years, Matt was feeling in his soul he needed to be where he could enjoy the outdoors and be apart of a little more social life and moved to Athabasca, Alberta with a long-time friend and their homestead. Soon after Matt needed to be moved to Long Term care in Lac La Biche, where he then peacefully passed away.
Matt was predeceased by his mother Sheila, father Harold and brother Malcolm.
He will be deeply missed by his daughters: Nicole (Travis), Janelle and Vanessa; his sisters: Heather (Ron), Bree, Rhonda (Bob); sister-in-law: Vicky; grandchildren: Kash, Hunter and Breanna. Matt also leaves behind many nieces and nephews with whom he shared wonderful times together.
Cremation will take place and a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
