New details have been released about an RCMP officer-involved shooting in Cold Lake earlier this month, with investigators saying a man armed with a knife advanced toward an officer before another officer opened fire.

The incident happened on the morning of Aug. 4 after Cold Lake RCMP were called to an apartment for a report of an intoxicated man who had reportedly been trying to harm himself.

Before officers arrived, dispatch advised them the man was the subject of an officer safety warning stemming from previous interactions with police.

At approximately 10 a.m., officers arrived at the apartment and told the man he was under arrest.

During an attempt to take him into custody, investigators say the man grabbed a knife and refused repeated police commands to drop it.

The man then advanced toward one of the officers. During the confrontation, another officer discharged their service pistol, striking the man.

Officers immediately began providing first aid and paramedics were called to the apartment.

The man was transported to hospital and is expected to survive his injuries.

The shooting was previously reported by RCMP on Aug. 4, when police said officers had responded to a domestic situation involving a weapon in the 5600 block of 54 Street. At the time, RCMP confirmed an officer had discharged their firearm and that the person who was shot was in stable condition.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) was called in to independently investigate the actions of police during the incident.
