A Cherry Grove nurse who serves patients across the Lakeland region has been recognized with a prestigious provincial scholarship for his dedication to rural healthcare and his commitment to furthering his education.

Shane Campbell, who lives in Cherry Grove and works with Primco Dene EMS/Covenant Health in Bonnyville, has been awarded the William Godfrey Scholarship through the Alberta Nurses Educational Trust (ANET). The scholarship recognizes nurses who demonstrate a strong commitment to their profession while pursuing further education.

For Campbell, the award is another step toward his goal of becoming a Nurse Practitioner and helping improve access to healthcare for people living in rural Alberta.

His journey into healthcare began long before nursing school. While volunteering with the IWK at Moncton Hospital in New Brunswick, Campbell supported families with sick children and discovered the lasting impact compassionate care can have during some of life’s most difficult moments. That experience inspired him to pursue a career in nursing.

After earning a Bachelor of Science degree, Campbell completed his nursing degree at the University of New Brunswick in 2014 before relocating to northern Alberta. Since then, he has built both his career and his family in the Lakeland.

Working in rural healthcare has exposed Campbell to nearly every aspect of patient care. Throughout his career, he has cared for patients in emergency medicine, trauma, pediatrics, geriatrics and many other clinical settings. The fast-paced nature of rural nursing has required him to develop a broad range of skills while adapting to the unique needs of each patient and community.

Those experiences have also given Campbell a firsthand look at the challenges facing rural healthcare, including staffing shortages, recruitment difficulties and limited access to services. Rather than accepting those barriers, he decided to become part of the solution by pursuing his Nurse Practitioner designation.

His goal is to provide comprehensive healthcare closer to home, helping rural residents access the care they need without having to travel long distances. After completing his education, Campbell hopes to continue serving wherever the need is greatest, whether that’s in a clinic, family practice, emergency department or hospital.

Outside of work and his studies, Campbell is a devoted husband and father of three. He enjoys spending time outdoors with his family dirt biking, fishing and swimming. He also volunteers as a firefighter and plays guitar.

ANET says Campbell’s dedication to rural healthcare, lifelong learning and community service made him an outstanding recipient of the William Godfrey Scholarship, adding that it looks forward to seeing the impact he will continue to make as a future Nurse Practitioner serving Albertans.
