The Municipal District of Bonnyville has applied for financial assistance through the Province of Alberta’s Hazard Assistance Resilience Program (HARP).

HARP helps cover costs associated with uninsurable loss and damage caused by disasters. In this case, the M.D., as the local authority, has applied to be included in the program due to the two-week excessive rain event stretching from April 21 to May 5, 2026, and the damage to public infrastructure during that time.

“It’s important to note that the M.D. has not been approved for this program. In the meantime, it is necessary for residents, farmers, and small businesses to keep track and document damages sustained during those two weeks. This will aid in the possibility of them receiving financial assistance when or if this program becomes accessible for general public/private claims,” said Director of Protective Services, Luis Gandolfi.

Things to keep in mind:

• Items that are insurable or that could have been insured, including farm equipment and vehicles, may not be covered by this program.
• If possible, keep photos of damages from before any clean-up activities.
• Contact your insurance company and open a claim. Keep all correspondence.
• Track your costs.

“The M.D. will make an announcement through its social platforms and website when a decision has been made by the provincial government, which can take several months. If we are approved, residents can apply to the provincial government, who will then make decisions on individual claims. The M.D. does not administer or execute the program,” Gandolfi further explained.
