Flood recovery, aging infrastructure and the growing financial pressures facing rural municipalities were among the key topics discussed during a series of meetings between Alberta’s Minister of Municipal Affairs and municipal leaders in the St. Paul region.

As part of a summer tour of communities across Alberta, Minister Dan Williams met with representatives from the County of St. Paul, Town of St. Paul and Town of Elk Point to hear directly about local priorities and challenges.

The discussions provided municipal leaders with an opportunity to raise issues affecting their communities while seeking provincial support for future planning and investment.

Flood recovery remains a top priority

Recent flooding was a central topic during the meetings, with municipal leaders outlining the impacts on roads, drainage systems and other public infrastructure.

Communities across the region continue to assess damage and plan for recovery while exploring ways to improve resilience against future flooding events.

Local officials also discussed the long-term support needed to help municipalities rebuild and strengthen infrastructure following severe weather.

Infrastructure and growth challenges

Municipal leaders also highlighted the challenges associated with aging infrastructure and the need for reliable funding to replace and upgrade essential municipal assets.

Electrical capacity was another priority raised during discussions, with communities noting that access to reliable power infrastructure is critical to attracting new businesses, supporting industrial growth and accommodating future development.

Long-term infrastructure planning and sustainable municipal funding were also identified as key priorities for maintaining strong and resilient rural communities.

Policing costs among municipal concerns

The rising cost of policing was another issue discussed during the meetings.

Municipal leaders shared concerns about the increasing financial burden of providing essential public safety services while balancing local budgets.

Bonnyville-Cold Lake-St. Paul MLA Scott Cyr said direct conversations between municipalities and the provincial government are important to ensuring local priorities are considered.

“Strong communication between municipalities and the provincial government is essential to ensuring local priorities are understood and considered as decisions are made,” Cyr said.

Province hears regional priorities

Williams was joined during portions of the regional tour by Athabasca-Barrhead-Westlock MLA Glenn van Dijken.

Cyr thanked the reeves, mayors, councillors and municipal administrators who participated, saying their advocacy helps ensure northeastern Alberta’s priorities are heard by provincial decision-makers.

He added that continued collaboration between municipalities and the province will be important as discussions continue around flood recovery, infrastructure investment, economic development and long-term community sustainability.

While no new funding announcements were made during the meetings, Williams indicated he would continue working with cabinet colleagues on issues requiring coordination across multiple government ministries.
