Alberta producers, agronomists and industry professionals will have the chance to explore the latest crop research and practical farming solutions when Alberta Crop Diagnostic Days returns to Lakeland College on Wednesday, July 16.

Hosted at Lakeland College’s Vermilion campus, the event combines field-based learning with Lakeland’s Cultivate & Connect showcase, giving attendees an opportunity to see current crop and agronomy research projects while connecting with researchers and industry leaders.

“This provides a valuable opportunity to share new technologies in agriculture through a field-based setting, while building meaningful connections with those shaping the future of the sector,” said Dr. Francois Paradis, Lakeland College’s Dean of Applied Research.

The event is a collaborative effort led by Alberta Grains, Alberta Pulse Growers, Alberta Canola Producers Commission, Lethbridge Polytechnic, Western Crop Innovation and Lakeland College. It is designed to bring together producers, researchers and industry representatives for a full day of crop tours, presentations and networking.

Nine presentations planned

The day begins with check-in at 7:45 a.m. at the crop plots. Throughout the event, attendees can meet Lakeland’s applied research team, including Dr. Balwinder Kumar, Dr. Haider Abbas and Robyne Davidson, alongside guest experts from the Government of Alberta, the University of Saskatchewan and the University of Alberta. Industry partners will also be on site with exhibits showcasing products, services and new technologies.

Presentation topics include:

• Improving pulse crop resiliency
• Current challenges and research in pulse production
• Spray water and its impact on crop protection and nutrient uptake
• Precision weed control in canola
• Straw harvest versus retention and its effects on soil health
• Richardson’s ground squirrel control
• Insect pest management in canola
• Preventing blackleg in canola
• Wild oat management

Participants can earn 4.5 continuing education unit (CEU) credits by attending the sessions.

Registration required

The event is free to attend, but advance registration is required. Snacks and lunch will be provided. Because activities take place outdoors, participants are encouraged to dress for the weather. Registration information is available through Lakeland College.

Lakeland College says its extensive applied research program is supported by more than 3,700 acres of farmland at its Vermilion campus, along with specialized facilities and research sites across Alberta and Western Canada.
