As Albertans head to campgrounds, lakes and trailheads this summer, the Alberta RCMP is reminding the public to take simple precautions to protect their vehicles and belongings from theft.

Police say many vehicle thefts and thefts from vehicles are crimes of opportunity that can be prevented by taking a few extra steps before leaving your vehicle unattended.

Tips to help prevent auto-related theft

The Alberta RCMP recommends:

• Lock your vehicle, even if you’re only stepping away for a moment.
• Never leave your vehicle running unattended, even during a quick stop at a convenience store.
• Take your keys with you and never leave garage door openers or personal documents inside your vehicle.
• Keep valuables out of sight or locked away. At campsites, secure bikes, kayaks and off-highway vehicles, and consider using window covers to conceal items inside your vehicle.
• Close all windows before leaving your vehicle. For recreational vehicles, a locked screen door can provide added security while still allowing airflow.
• Use a hitch lock to help prevent trailer theft.
• Install motion sensor lights outside your recreational vehicle to deter thieves.

The RCMP says a little preparation can go a long way in preventing theft and ensuring summer adventures aren’t interrupted by crime.
