Northland School Division has announced the appointment of Murray Marran as its new Superintendent of Schools and Chief Executive Officer, effective September 1, 2026.
Marran brings nearly 30 years of experience in education and is no stranger to the division. He previously served as Northland School Division’s Associate Superintendent of Human Resources before moving on to become Superintendent and CEO of High Prairie School Division.
His career has included leadership roles in both public and private education, serving as a teacher, department head, Director of Admissions, Chief Financial Officer, principal, Assistant Superintendent of Finance and District Principal of Accountability. His experience spans human resources, finance, school operations and overall system leadership.
Northland School Division Board Chair Tanya Fayant said Marran emerged from a strong national field of candidates due to his proven leadership, familiarity with the division and commitment to working alongside the communities Northland serves.
“Our nationwide search resulted in a strong field of applicants,” said Fayant. “Mr. Marran was selected because of his proven leadership, his knowledge of Northland School Division and his commitment to working with the communities we serve.”
Marran said he is excited to return to the division and continue supporting student success.
“My time in High Prairie School Division as their Superintendent & CEO gave me incredible opportunities to effect collaborative and mindful change and improvement focused on student success,” said Marran. “I am excited to be working again with Northland School Division as we continue providing assurance that the division is meeting the needs and aspirations of our students, staff and communities.”
He also credited outgoing Superintendent Cal Johnson for helping guide the division’s success and said he looks forward to building on that foundation.
Marran holds a Bachelor of Education and a Master of Education from the University of Calgary, along with a Master of Business Administration from Royal Roads University in Victoria, B.C.
Northland School Division says it looks forward to welcoming Marran back and working together to support students, staff, families and communities across northern Alberta.
