The Lakeland Lacrosse Association will receive municipal support for one of its biggest annual events, with council approving a ,000 donation for the upcoming Ice Melter Tournament.

The funding follows a delegation presentation to council, where organizers outlined the scale and impact of the event, which takes place May 8–10, 2026 over Mother’s Day weekend.

The Ice Melter has grown into a major regional tournament, bringing together dozens of teams and hundreds of athletes and families for a full weekend of competition and community activity.

A Regional Event Across Multiple Communities

Games will be hosted across several venues in the Lakeland, including:

• Cold Lake North Arena
• Cold Lake Energy Centre (Cenovus Arena and Field House)
• Bonnyville Centennial Centre (RJ Lalonde Arena and Field House)
• Glendon Arena

Each division is guaranteed at least three games, with bronze medal games featured in U9 through U13 divisions.

More Than Just Lacrosse

Organizers emphasized that the Ice Melter is designed as a family-friendly weekend, not just a tournament.

Off the floor, the event includes:

• Raffle tables
• Tournament apparel (pre-order and on-site)
• On-site vendors including CanLax
• Mother’s Day gift options
• Scavenger hunts and activities for kids

The goal is to create an experience that keeps players, parents and siblings engaged throughout the weekend.

Council Supports After Missed Deadline

The funding request came forward after the association encountered an issue submitting its grant application on time.

Council acknowledged the situation and approved the request, noting the event’s value to the community and local economy.

Council highlights described the decision as both accepting the presentation as information and approving the $5,000 donation.

With teams travelling into the region, the tournament generates activity for:

• Restaurants and local businesses
