Residents across the M.D. of Bonnyville are dealing with flooding concerns following a stretch of extreme weather, prompting an ongoing response from municipal crews.
In a written statement shared publicly, councillor Caroline Palmer acknowledged the growing concern in the community as heavy rain combined with late-season snow continues to impact the region.
“With additional snow still to melt, we recognize that many residents are feeling concerned and uncertain about what the coming days may bring,” Palmer wrote.
Crews working extended hours across large area
Municipal crews are currently working extended hours to respond to flooding issues across the M.D., which spans a large and diverse geographic area.
However, with limited staff, equipment, and resources such as water pumps, response efforts are being prioritized.
“Resources must be prioritized to address the most critical situations first,” Palmer wrote. “This ensures we are responding where the risk to safety, homes, and infrastructure is greatest.”
Clarifying council’s role
Palmer also addressed a common misconception about how decisions are made during emergency situations.
“Councillors are not able to direct staff or reassign resources,” she wrote. “These decisions are made by Administration to ensure a coordinated, fair, and effective response.”
Residents encouraged to report issues
Residents experiencing flooding are strongly encouraged to contact the M.D. directly.
Calling 780-812-5000 ensures concerns are:
- Logged
- Assessed
- Included in daily operational planning
“Logging your issue helps ensure it is recorded… so that no concerns are overlooked,” Palmer wrote.
Short-term mitigation and ongoing updates
Where possible, residents are being asked to take short-term steps to help manage water on their own properties.
The M.D. will continue to provide updates, including:
- Road closures
- Response efforts
Information is also being shared through the Voyent Alert system, which residents can download to receive real-time notifications.
Community impact
“We understand how difficult and stressful this situation is for those affected,” Palmer wrote. “Please know that your concerns are heard, and they matter.”
With more snow still expected to melt, the situation remains fluid, and residents are being asked to stay informed and patient as crews continue their work.
