Community Steps Up for Students

On March 25, the Voyageur Grill at Portage College in Lac La Biche hosted its annual Easter dinner, serving more than 200 turkey meals to students and their families.

The event brought together volunteers from Lord of Glory Lutheran Church, Portage College staff, the Lac La Biche Rotary Club, and community members. Plates were filled with turkey, stuffing, potatoes, vegetables, and gravy — a full home-style meal during a stressful time of year.

 

More Than Just a Meal

Organizer David Paul, who is both a Portage employee and community volunteer, says the timing of the event is key.

“This is a time when stress levels are up and bank accounts are usually low,” said Paul.

The dinner offered more than food. It created a space for connection, support, and a reminder that students are not alone.

Family-friendly activities were also available through the Students’ Association of Portage College, making it an inclusive evening for students with children.

 

Leftovers That Keep Giving

Nothing went to waste. Any leftover food was added to the college’s Give & Take Pantry — a free-access fridge and dry goods cupboard available to students in need.

It’s another way the college and community continue to support students beyond just one night.

 

A Strong Example of Local Support

Paul says this year’s event was one of the most successful yet, thanks to the volunteers who showed up and gave their time.

Events like this highlight what small communities do best — showing up, pitching in, and taking care of each other when it matters most.
