County of Vermilion River Peace Officers have been busy on two very different public safety fronts this week, teaming up with Alberta law enforcement partners on heavy truck enforcement and black bear monitoring near Kitscoty.
The joint operations included patrols on reduced roads during road ban season, as well as a response involving Alberta Fish and Wildlife after several black bears were reported near the Village of Kitscoty.
Road ban patrols underway

According to the County of Vermilion River, peace officers have been working alongside Alberta Transportation officers, including Transportation of Dangerous Goods enforcement, to patrol reduced roads and carry out compliance checks on heavy and commercial vehicles.
With road bans now in effect, the focus has been on making sure commercial traffic is following seasonal restrictions meant to protect local roads from damage during softer spring conditions.
Bears reported near Kitscoty
The county also responded to multiple reports of black bears in the Kitscoty area in partnership with Alberta Fish and Wildlife Enforcement in Vermilion.
Officials say it is believed three bears are in the area, including a female with a cub and a larger male. The bears are being monitored because of how close they are to the urban area.
While bear sightings are not unusual in this region, residents are being reminded to stay alert and take simple steps to avoid attracting wildlife.
Bear awareness reminders
Officials are encouraging people to remove common attractants such as garbage, bird seed and pet food. Residents are also being told never to approach a lone cub and to make noise while walking outside in areas where bears may be present.
More information on bear awareness is available through the Government of Alberta.
