It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Darrell Lessmeister. The Mayor, Council, Public Works and Administration of the Town of Elk Point extend their sincere condolences to the family of Darrell Lessmeister, his friends, and the entire Elk Point community during this time of loss.
Out of respect for the family during this difficult time, the Town postponed this announcement to allow them the space and privacy to grieve.
Darrell served as Chief Administrative Officer with dedication, compassion, and a genuine commitment to the people of Elk Point. He believed strongly in bringing the community together and worked tirelessly to build and strengthen relationships—within the organization and throughout the town and region. His leadership was grounded not only in professionalism, but in kindness, respect, and a true care for others.
Those who worked with Darrell will remember him for his warmth, his approachability, and his unwavering belief in the importance of community. He leaves behind a legacy of connection, collaboration, and care that will continue to be felt throughout Elk Point.
As Council and Staff navigate this loss, we ask for patience and understanding as we take the necessary time to determine next steps and continue the work of the municipality during this period of transition.
The Town of Elk Point will share information regarding memorial arrangements as it becomes available. We kindly ask that the family’s privacy continue to be respected.
Flags at municipal facilities will be lowered in his honour.
On behalf of Council, Public Works and Administration, we are grateful for Darrell’s service, his leadership, and the relationships he helped build. He will not be forgotten.

Elk Point appoints interim CAO following unexpected absence
Elk Point council has appointed an interim Chief Administrative Officer following what was described as “unforeseen circumstances” at its March 3 meeting.
Council approved the appointment of Mir Ali as interim CAO, with Mayor Wanda Cochrane stepping into an administrative leadership role in the short term as well.
The move comes just days after CAO Darrell Lessmeister was absent from the meeting, with council noting the need to ensure continuity in municipal operations.
“Due to some unforeseen circumstances we will be looking at appointing an interim chief administrative officer,” council heard prior to the vote.
The motion to appoint Ali was carried unanimously.
The decision ensures the municipality can continue day-to-day operations while longer-term decisions are considered.
