The community is being called to step up — literally — as Stepping Stones Crisis Society prepares to host its next Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event in Cold Lake.

Set for Saturday, April 25 at the Cold Lake Energy Centre, the event invites residents to take part in a powerful show of support for survivors of family violence while raising funds for critical local services.

A Walk That Sparks Conversation

Walk a Mile in Her Shoes is an international awareness campaign that encourages participants — especially men — to walk one mile in red high heels.

The goal is simple but impactful: start conversations around gender-based violence, build understanding, and stand in solidarity with survivors.

The event brings together individuals, businesses, and organizations from across the region, creating space for meaningful dialogue about prevention and support.

Building on a Strong Local Impact

The last Walk a Mile event in 2024 brought together more than 20 participants, raising over $10,000 for Stepping Stones Crisis Society.

“We were incredibly grateful for the support and turnout we saw at our last event,” said April Simard, Community Engagement and Events Manager.
“Walk a Mile is a special event, and at its core, it’s about building understanding, showing support for survivors, and spreading a message of hope and resiliency.”

Supporting Vital Local Services

Funds raised through the event go directly toward Stepping Stones’ work in the community.

That includes:

  • Providing safe shelter for individuals and families experiencing violence

  • Expanding outreach and education programs

  • Promoting awareness and prevention of family violence

Each step taken during the walk helps strengthen support systems for those who need it most.

How to Get Involved

Community members have several ways to take part:

  • Register as a walker

  • Form a team with friends, family, or coworkers

  • Pledge support to participants

  • Volunteer at the event

Stepping Stones is also recognizing the support of this year’s sponsors, Lakeland Credit Union and Armand Gagnier.

“Events like Walk a Mile are only possible because of the incredible support we receive from local businesses and community members,” said Interim CEO Jody Hawkridge.
