A semi truck rollover has shut down Highway 897 north of Highway 16, as icy roads continue to create dangerous driving conditions across the region.
The incident happened around 9:15 p.m. when a semi truck and trailer lost control, slid and rolled before coming to a stop just south of Township Road 510.
Multiple vehicles involved, initial entrapment reported
Early reports from bystanders indicated multiple vehicles were involved and that at least one person was trapped. Emergency crews were quickly dispatched to the scene.
Responding agencies include Kitscoty Fire Department, County units #9-1 and #9-6, Marwayne Fire and Rescue, Medavie Health Services West – Northeast Alberta, and the Kitscoty RCMP.
A Voyent Alert was also issued by the region’s Emergency Management Division.
Injuries minor but road remains closed
Officials say injuries are believed to be minor, but the situation remains active with firefighters still on scene.
Highway 897 is currently closed, with detours in place.
Travel not recommended
Freezing rain and icy conditions are continuing to impact roads throughout the area.
Drivers are being advised to avoid travel if possible and to check 511 Alberta for the latest highway updates.
Conditions remain poor and could change quickly overnight.
