In Loving Memory: Agnes Sawchuk – Northern Lights Funeral Home
Agnes Sawchuk
With full hearts and deep gratitude for a life beautifully lived, the family of Agnes Sawchuk announces her peaceful passing at the remarkable age of 101 years. A steadfast matriarch, Agnes graced this world with more than a century of wisdom, love, and gentle strength.
She will be forever remembered and deeply loved by her grandchildren, Natasha Ciurysek (Richard) and Matthew (Kelli) Ciurysek; her great‑grandchildren, Sullivan Ciurysek and Maxwell Ciurysek; her niece, Anna Marie Bougie; and her nephews, Bernie Bougie, Phillip Bougie, and Gerald Grusbia.
Agnes is now reunited in heaven with her beloved husband, John Sawchuk; her sons, Kenneth and Victor Ciurysek; grandson: Steven Ciurysek; and her siblings, Frank Besaraba, Maryanne Bougie, and Stella Grubisa.
Born in Poland, Agnes came to Canada in 1928, where her family farmed the same cherished land in Bonnyville for more than a century. In her early years, she worked as a housekeeper and waitress, always carrying herself with quiet determination and grace. Agnes married Walter Ciurysek, and together they welcomed two sons, Ken and Victor. After Walter’s passing, Agnes later met John Sawchuk, with whom she built a warm and welcoming home in Bonnyville. She lived in that home until 2024, when she moved into the Bonnylodge.
Agnes and John shared a love of travelling, gardening, and camping. Even after John’s passing, Agnes continued to tend her garden well into her late nineties. She was known throughout town for riding her bicycle—her favorite means of transportation—and for her faithful presence at church, where she loved helping lead the Rosary at Mass.
A woman deeply connected to the land and the outdoors, Agnes picked countless ice‑cream pails full of wild blueberries over the years. She will be dearly missed by her family, especially for the stories she shared about growing up on the farm—stories that now become treasured pieces of her legacy.
