New Light of Christ Catholic School in Lac La Biche
Lakeland Catholic School Division expressed gratitude to the Government of Alberta and Education and Childcare Minister Demetrios Nicolaides for approving Light of Christ Catholic School in Lac La Biche under the School Construction Accelerator Program (SCAP), also known as the “Schools Now” program.
After more than a decade of advocacy, Lac La Biche will receive a new K–12 Catholic school designed to meet modern educational standards. The division thanked MLA Tany Yao, Minister Brian Jean, and Lac La Biche County Mayor Paul Reutov and council for their advocacy in securing the funding.
Light of Christ Catholic School has operated since 2015 in a facility not intended for long-term K–12 use. The current building’s age, configuration, and lease structure have presented limitations for programming, student safety, and long-term sustainability.
The new school will include early learning and childcare integration, an Indigenous gathering space, and shared-use amenities to strengthen community partnerships. Located next to the Bold Centre on land provided by Lac La Biche County, the facility will allow students improved access to recreation and athletics.
Board Chair Anna Brockhoff said the announcement represents a promise fulfilled to families in Lac La Biche and strengthens rural Catholic education for generations of students.
Lakeland Catholic School Division will continue working with provincial and community partners as the project moves into design and construction phases.
