Lakeland Catholic Celebrates Anna Fagnan as Edwin Parr Award Nominee
At Assumption Jr/Sr High School, Ms. Anna Fagnan begins each class the same way — greeting every student at the door. It’s a simple gesture, but it reflects something larger: a classroom built on belonging, respect, and high expectations.
Lakeland Catholic School Division is proud to announce that Ms. Fagnan has been selected as this year’s Edwin Parr Teacher Award nominee, recognizing Alberta’s most outstanding first-year teachers.
Named in honour of former Alberta School Boards Association president Edwin Parr, the award celebrates beginning teachers who demonstrate exceptional promise, professionalism, and strong alignment with the Teaching Quality Standard.
In just her first year, Ms. Fagnan has distinguished herself through thoughtful planning, inclusive instructional design, and a calm, confident presence that puts students at ease while challenging them to grow. Teaching English Language Arts, Social Studies, and Religion, she creates learning experiences that stretch students’ thinking while ensuring every learner feels supported.
“It is truly an honour to be nominated for the Edwin Parr Award,” remarked Ms. Fagnan. “I am so grateful for my amazing school community, who have supported and encouraged me as I’ve grown in my first year of teaching. I am blessed with the very best students, and I am thankful to be part of a school community that feels like family. All glory goes to God — He is the one who strengthens me each and every day.”
Principal Elaine Ernst describes her as an early-career educator whose professionalism already mirrors that of a seasoned teacher.
“Anna brings intentionality to everything she does. Her classroom reflects both academic rigour and compassionate care.”
Ms. Fagnan also integrates First Nations, Métis, and Inuit perspectives into her teaching in meaningful and age-appropriate ways. Through experiential learning and storytelling, she helps students connect concepts to lived experience. In Religion and Social Studies, she guides thoughtful discussions around stewardship, reconciliation, Treaties, and the responsibilities we share as citizens, encouraging critical thinking grounded in respect and hope.
Her Catholic faith is not an add-on to her teaching — it is woven into it. Whether exploring justice, stewardship, or service, she approaches each subject through a lens of compassion and responsibility. Her classroom management reflects mercy and restoration, modelling Christ’s example in daily practice.
Beyond the classroom, Ms. Fagnan serves as a children’s church facilitator and coaches Grade 7 and 8 girls’ volleyball, building relationships that extend far beyond school hours.
“Anna exemplifies the mission of Lakeland Catholic,” said Board Chair Anna Brockhoff. “She forms both hearts and minds, and her commitment to Catholic education is already making a meaningful difference.”
Lakeland Catholic congratulates Ms. Fagnan on this significant achievement and celebrates the bright future she represents for Catholic education in the region.
