Age Friendly Cold Lake is asking the MD of Bonnyville to support an expanded regional model to help seniors stay independent longer.
Representatives told council their organization has already provided 117 medical transportation trips to Edmonton and operates caregiver support programs in Bonnyville and Cold Lake.
Now they want to formalize their presence across the region.
If approved as a Community Association member, the nonprofit would be eligible to apply for operating grants through the MD’s Community Association Grants program.
Transportation and Caregiver Gaps
During the presentation, the organizers outlined ongoing transportation challenges for seniors who need medical appointments outside the region.
They also highlighted caregiver burnout, noting families often struggle quietly without structured support.
The group’s services currently include:
-
Medical transportation coordination
-
Caregiver education programs
-
Social programming
-
End-of-life support resources
Council members asked questions about sustainability, funding structure and long-term capacity.
Regional Expansion Model
The proposal would see Age Friendly operate under a broader regional umbrella rather than strictly within municipal boundaries.
That would allow services to reach rural residents who may not currently qualify under local programs.
Council did not make an immediate funding decision.
Instead, members directed administration to bring the request back at a future meeting for further consideration.
What Happens Next
For now, the request remains under review.
If approved, Age Friendly Cold Lake could formally expand its regional footprint and apply for operational funding support through the MD.
