Glendon’s RCMP Hall and Arena Shine During Winter Games as Village Looks Ahead
Glendon proved it can host — and host well.
From ringette action at the arena to continued upgrades at the RCMP Hall, Mayor Brian Papriny says the Alberta Winter Games weekend showcased not just local facilities, but the heart of the community.
“It turned out to be a fantastic weekend,” Papriny said. “Parents were good, athletes were good, all the guests were good. Amazing facility that we have here. I could not have been happier as the mayor of Glendon.”
Winter Games Bring Energy to Glendon
Glendon hosted ringette during the Alberta Winter Games, drawing athletes and families into the village.
Papriny attended the opening ceremonies in Cold Lake before returning home to take in the competition.
“I didn’t know much about that sport,” he admitted. “But after watching it, that’s a lot of skilled players on that ice.”
He credited volunteers and organizers for making the weekend a success.
“I couldn’t be happier for everyone that was involved in the event. And there’s a long list, so a big thank you.”
The weekend not only brought energy into the community, it also highlighted the recent upgrades to the arena and RCMP Hall facility.
Arena Upgrades Create New Opportunity
The rink received exterior and interior improvements, along with much-needed ice upgrades.
“It needed it,” Papriny said. “Not just on the outside facelift and inside facelift, but the ice itself needed a facelift.”
He says those improvements now give Glendon options it didn’t previously have.
“What does that mean for Glendon? Well, a whole lot of opportunity,” he said. “Now we’re in a position where maybe we can start doing some extra things.”
One idea already floated? Preseason games.
“Maybe some preseason games with the Pontiacs or something like that,” Papriny said. “Maybe we can start partnering up.”
Beyond special events, the upgrades help address aging infrastructure while extending the life of an important community hub.
“It’s opportunity,” he said. “That’s all we can ask for. Now it’s up to us to finish that off and have at it.”
More Than a Small Village
While Glendon may be small, Papriny says there is no shortage of activity.
“We still have some things to finish up here,” he said of the RCMP Hall and arena facility.
The village is also in the middle of constructing a new Historical Society building on Main Street, while a new gym was completed last year.
“We’re continuing on to build more for Glendon and its residents,” Papriny said. “To say there’s not much happening — there’s a lot happening.”
He says staying busy is a good thing.
“It keeps us busy, keeps us on our toes and it keeps the public engaged — and that’s what we want.”
Community Pride on Full Display
Papriny also made a point to recognize the quality of the arena ice and the work behind the scenes.
Scott Delair was praised for maintaining what many consider some of the best ice in the Lakeland.
And yes — the rink burgers are still a draw.
“You have not tried a burger until you check out Hayley here,” Papriny said, referencing the concession and Pink Pierogi Club catering. “Definitely check out a rink burger. You won’t be disappointed.”
Looking Ahead
For Papriny, the Winter Games were more than a successful weekend. They were proof that Glendon can host, can upgrade, and can plan for more.
With improved facilities, ongoing capital projects, and renewed momentum, the mayor says the focus is clear.
“It’s opportunity,” he said. “And now it’s up to us.”
