Cold Lake Says Thank You to Former Mayor Craig Copeland After 18 Years of Service
Cold Lake took time this past weekend to do something it does best — show gratitude to one of its own.
On Sunday, community members, local leaders, and family gathered to celebrate and formally say farewell to former Mayor Craig Copeland, marking the end of more than 18 years of dedicated public service to the City of Cold Lake.
A Room Full of Respect and Stories
The event brought together people of all ages, from long-time residents to younger community members, each with stories that reflected Craig Copeland’s steady leadership and deep care for Cold Lake.
Current Mayor Bob Mattice described the afternoon as one filled with memories, laughter, and genuine appreciation. He noted that Craig’s impact on the community was clear in every conversation and every face in the room.
“Cold Lake is better because of you,” Mattice shared, thanking Craig not only for his leadership legacy but also for the example he set through consistency, humility, and service.

Recognizing a Lasting Legacy
MLA Scott Cyr also spoke at the event, highlighting how Craig’s unwavering focus on Cold Lake helped shape where the city is today — and where it’s headed.
Cyr pointed to the standing ovation Craig received as a powerful reflection of the respect he has earned over the years. Light-hearted stories shared throughout the afternoon offered insight into a leader who was known for being prepared, thoughtful, and often one step ahead.
The gathering also included Mayor Mattice and the entire current City Council — Councillors Ryan Bailey, Raymond Cowell, Vicky Lefebvre, Bill Parker, Chris Vining, and Dawn Weber — underscoring the strong foundation Craig leaves behind and the respect held across council.
Behind Every Public Servant Is Family Support
Several speakers took time to acknowledge Craig’s wife, Joanne, whose behind-the-scenes support made years of public service possible. Public service demands a great deal from families, and Joanne’s presence, encouragement, and partnership were recognized as an essential part of Craig’s journey.

A New Chapter Ahead
While Craig isn’t going far, retirement from council sounds like it will include fewer agendas and a little more time fishing — a well-earned change after years of long meetings and full days.
As Cold Lake looks ahead, the message from Sunday was clear: Craig Copeland’s legacy of service, leadership, and community-first decision-making will continue to be felt for years to come.
Cold Lake said thank you — and meant it.
