Fire Crews Stretched Across County as High Winds Trigger Multiple Emergencies
County of Vermilion River firefighters and emergency responders faced a demanding afternoon as strong winds sparked power outages, fires and a serious collision across the region.
High Winds Cause Widespread Issues
The County remains under a Yellow Wind Warning, with gusts reaching between 90 and 100 km/h throughout the day. Conditions created hazardous situations across the region, though winds are expected to weaken later this evening.
Shortly before 2 p.m., a widespread power outage affected Lloydminster and large portions of the County after strong winds knocked out power infrastructure. ATCO crews were dispatched and continue working to restore service as quickly as possible.
Fire departments were also sent to multiple reports of downed power lines as a result of the high winds.

Bale Fire Challenges Crews
Just after 3 p.m., Dewberry Fire & Rescue and Clandonald Fire were dispatched to a report of hay bales on fire. Firefighters worked to contain spreading embers and extinguish the flames, with high winds making suppression efforts more difficult. Despite the conditions, crews made significant progress in controlling the fire.
Collision South of Blackfoot
At approximately 4 p.m., emergency crews responded to a reported collision south of Blackfoot. Blackfoot Fire and Rescue, Kitscoty Fire Department and County #9-1 were all dispatched to the scene. Details on injuries or the cause of the collision have not yet been released.
Emergency Services Remain Active
County Fire Chief Kirk Hughes says responders remain stretched as calls continue to come in.
“Crews remain active across the County, whether that be firefighters, utility workers, police and paramedics,” Hughes stated. “Be patient as responders deal with multiple calls.”
Residents are encouraged to use caution, secure loose items and avoid downed power lines as emergency crews continue responding across the County of Vermilion River.
