Athabasca RCMP Traffic Stop Leads to Drug and Firearm Seizures, 18 Charges Laid
What started as a routine traffic stop in Athabasca County quickly escalated into a major criminal investigation involving drugs, loaded firearms, and a long list of charges.
Athabasca RCMP say an adult male was arrested and multiple illegal items were seized following a proactive traffic stop on January 14, 2026.
Traffic Stop Sparks Larger Investigation
Shortly after 1 p.m., officers observed a vehicle travelling on Highway 827 near Township Road 663 that was displaying concerning driving behaviour. Police initiated a traffic stop due to public safety concerns and to check the sobriety of the driver.
A Mandatory Alcohol Screening demand confirmed alcohol was present in the driver’s system, though not at criminal levels. However, officers observed signs of impairment and requested assistance from a Drug Recognition Expert with the Boyle RCMP Traffic Unit.
Drugs, Firearms, and Weapons Found
As the investigation continued, officers searched the vehicle and located a significant amount of contraband, including:
-
Suspected methamphetamine
-
Suspected cocaine
-
Gamma hydroxybutyrate (GHB)
-
Two loaded shotguns, one confirmed stolen
-
An imitation handgun
-
Ammunition
-
Edged weapons
The driver was arrested at the scene for multiple offences and outstanding arrest warrants. Charges related to drug-impaired driving are still pending laboratory analysis, and the investigation remains ongoing.

RCMP Emphasize Importance of Proactive Policing
“This investigation highlights the importance of proactive traffic enforcement,” said Staff Sgt. Mark Hall, detachment commander of Athabasca RCMP. “What begins as a traffic stop focused on road safety can quickly uncover serious criminal activity. These proactive policing efforts directly support crime reduction and enhance the safety of our communities.”
Athabasca RCMP say they will continue proactive enforcement efforts to keep local roads and communities safe.
