Cold Lake RCMP Investigate Early-Morning Mailbox Break-Ins Across the City
Cold Lake RCMP are investigating a string of mailbox break-ins that have residents frustrated and concerned about the security of their mail.
Police say multiple incidents were reported earlier this week, with the thefts believed to have occurred in the early morning hours.
Multiple Areas Affected
RCMP began receiving reports around 7:30 am on January 6 after residents discovered damage to community mailboxes in several parts of the city. Confirmed locations include areas around Third Avenue, 38th Street, 45th Street, and Forest Drive.
At least three separate mailbox break-ins have been confirmed so far.
Surveillance footage shows three suspects involved, the images are not clear enough at this time to identify those responsible. Police continue to review the footage as part of the investigation.
Thieves Targeted Mail, Not Flyers
Photos from the scenes show advertising materials scattered around the mailboxes, suggesting the suspects were searching for personal mail or items of value rather than taking flyers.
Canada Post has been notified of the incidents. Any additional security measures that may be implemented have not yet been confirmed.
Early Morning Timing
Based on surveillance footage, the RCMP believe the break-ins occurred around 3 am. Police are advising residents to check their mailboxes daily, preferably before nightfall, to reduce the chance of mail sitting unattended overnight.
Regular checks can also help residents quickly spot suspicious activity or damage.
Similar Incidents Elsewhere
RCMP say mailbox break-ins have also been reported in other Alberta communities. Incidents have recently occurred near the Mountain Ash Complex in Slave Lake and in Spruce Grove, though police do not believe all cases are connected due to distance and timing.
Mailbox theft remains an ongoing issue across multiple Alberta jurisdictions.
Investigation Ongoing
Cold Lake RCMP continue to gather information and are asking residents to remain vigilant. Police say they will share updates as more details become available and as additional steps are explored to improve mailbox security.
Anyone who notices suspicious activity or has information related to the break-ins is encouraged to contact Cold Lake RCMP.
