Armed Robbery Suspect Arrested After Rural Incident Near Lac La Biche
Lac La Biche RCMP have arrested a Fort McMurray man following an armed robbery at a rural residence just before Christmas, an incident that led to a multi-unit police operation and temporary safety measures at local schools and a motel.
Robbery Reported Christmas Eve
RCMP say the incident happened on December 24, 2025, shortly after 6 p.m., when a rural resident returned home and found an unknown man in his yard. Police report that the suspect, who arrived in a pickup truck, pointed a long gun at the homeowner, demanded he leave the property, and then stole a vehicle from the residence.
The victim was able to report the incident to police, prompting an immediate RCMP response.
Stolen Vehicle Located, Suspect Tracked
On January 4, 2026, while on patrol in Lac La Biche, RCMP located the stolen vehicle. The male driver was arrested, and further investigation led police to a local motel where the robbery suspect was believed to be staying.
On January 5, RCMP obtained a search warrant for a specific motel room linked to the suspect.
Schools Held Secure, Motel Evacuated
Before attempting the arrest, RCMP advised four nearby schools to hold and secure as a precaution. Neighbouring motel rooms were also evacuated to ensure public safety.
Police arrested the suspect without incident.

Sonny Ray Giant, 44, of Fort McMurray, described by RCMP as a known prolific offender, is facing multiple charges including:
