Christmas Collisions Keep County of Vermilion River Emergency Crews Busy
Emergency responders across the County of Vermilion River were kept busy over the Christmas period, responding to multiple motor vehicle incidents involving both passenger vehicles and commercial trucks.
With winter conditions, snowfall warnings, and gusty winds affecting the region, fire departments, EMS, and RCMP were called to several highways to manage scenes, provide patient care, and keep roads safe for travellers.
Two-Vehicle Collision Near Dewberry
On Christmas afternoon at approximately 1:48 p.m., Dewberry Fire & Rescue and Clandonald Fire & Rescue were dispatched alongside EMS and RCMP to a two-vehicle collision involving a semi-truck and a pickup truck.
The collision occurred at Highway 640 and Range Road 52. Firefighters stabilized the scene upon arrival, established traffic control, and provided patient care to both drivers involved.
RCMP are investigating the cause of the collision.
Semi-Truck Incident on Highway 897 Christmas Eve
Earlier in the holiday period, emergency crews were also called out on Christmas Eve following a reported semi-truck rollover on Highway 897 near Township Road 512.
At approximately 8:35 p.m., the Kitscoty Fire Department, County Fire Unit 9-6, and members of the Kitscoty RCMP Detachment responded to the scene. First crews on scene determined the tanker had not rolled and was upright, having slid partially into the ditch.
Firefighters set up traffic control while a tow company worked to return the truck to the roadway. As of 10:30 p.m., the highway was fully reopened.
With a snowfall warning in effect at the time and strong winds in the area, emergency officials are reminding motorists to drive with an abundance of caution throughout the holiday season and during winter travel conditions
