Alberta RCMP Share Intersection Safety Tips for the New Year

Published On: January 6, 2026By

As the new year begins, Alberta RCMP are reminding drivers and pedestrians to slow down and stay alert at intersections, a common location for serious traffic collisions.

Police say intersections are high-traffic areas where motorists, cyclists and pedestrians must all follow right-of-way rules and remain aware of their surroundings.

RCMP note that many collisions resulting in injuries or fatalities are caused by drivers failing to obey stop signs, running red lights, or making unsafe left-hand turns.

Tips for Motorists

Alberta RCMP encourage drivers to take extra care when approaching and travelling through intersections by following these safety reminders:

  • Slow down as you approach an intersection and check for traffic before proceeding

  • Obey all traffic signs and signals and come to a full stop at red lights and stop signs, even when turning right

  • At four-way stops, yield to the vehicle on your right

  • Leave adequate space between your vehicle and others, as vehicles ahead may stop suddenly

  • Use turn signals and ensure it is safe before making a left-hand turn

  • Watch for pedestrians in both marked and unmarked crosswalks when turning or stopping

  • Be prepared for changing lights, slippery conditions, pedestrians, and other drivers

  • Do not speed up for a yellow light; slow down and prepare to stop

Tips for Pedestrians

Pedestrians are also reminded to do their part to stay safe at intersections:

  • Never jaywalk and always check traffic before crossing

  • Use crosswalks and pedestrian-activated signals whenever available

  • Avoid distractions such as headphones or cell phones when crossing the street

  • Make eye contact with drivers to ensure you are seen

“Intersections can present challenges for drivers and pedestrians,” said Sgt. Darrin Turnbull with Alberta RCMP Traffic. “Always be prepared for the unexpected. Pay attention to changing lights and each other before proceeding through an intersection. Traffic safety is everyone’s responsibility.”
