Alberta Legislature Passes Motion Supporting Law-Abiding Firearms Owners

The Alberta Legislature has passed a motion aimed at defending law-abiding firearms owners, an issue that continues to resonate across rural and northern Alberta.

MLA Scott Cyr spoke in support of the motion, saying responsible firearms owners should not be treated like criminals.

“Across Lakeland, hunters, sport shooters, farmers, ranchers, and outdoor enthusiasts are trained, licensed, and follow the rules,” Cyr said. “They are not the source of violent crime and they should never be treated like criminals.”

Cyr criticized the federal government’s firearms confiscation program, calling it costly and ineffective.

“Ottawa continues to push ahead with an ineffective and costly firearms confiscation scheme expected to exceed $750 million,” he said, noting a pilot project in Nova Scotia collected only a small number of firearms.

He said the motion, passed under the Alberta Sovereignty within a United Canada Act, sends a clear message about provincial priorities.

“With this motion now adopted, provincial entities will decline to enforce or implement the federal gun seizure program,” Cyr said. “Law enforcement will stay focused on real priorities like violent criminals, gangs, and threats to community safety.”

The motion also reaffirms Albertans’ right to use reasonable force to defend themselves, their families, and their homes, and reinforces language already included in the Alberta Bill of Rights.

“Albertans have the right to acquire, keep, and use firearms in accordance with the law,” Cyr said, pointing to the more than 381,900 licensed firearms owners in the province.

Cyr noted the motion passed with government support, while opposition members voted against it, calling the vote disappointing for responsible gun owners.

“Their vote sends the wrong message to responsible firearms owners who simply want to be treated fairly under the law,” he said.

Cyr thanked Premier Danielle Smith and provincial ministers for supporting the motion and said he will continue advocating for rural communities.

“I will continue to stand up for common sense, for responsible firearms owners, and for a safer Alberta for everyone,” he said.
