St. Paul Curling Club Raises $3,700 for Haying in the 30’s
The St. Paul Curling Club brought in ,700 during its sixth annual funspiel on 22 November, supporting the Haying in the 30’s Cancer Support Society. The long-running event continues to highlight how sport, community, and generosity intersect in St. Paul.
Supporting a Cause that Supports Families
Haying in the 30’s is known across the Lakeland for helping cancer patients cover travel, accommodation, and other costs when receiving treatment in major centres. The curling club’s contribution adds to a growing legacy of support, bringing the total raised through this funspiel to $24,000 since it began.
Sixteen teams took part this year, joined by families, friends, and community members who turned out to show their support. The event once again proved to be a place where all ages gather, play, and give back.
A Family-Friendly Tradition
Many players take part with their families, making the funspiel as much about community as it is about curling. Participants spoke about the chance to spend time together, connect with neighbours, and support a charity that touches nearly every family in some way.
Strong Start to the Curling Season
The funspiel also marks the first bonspiel of the season for St. Paul. The club reports just under 200 members this year, including 34 junior curlers, which is slightly higher than average. The presence of high-level athletes training locally has also helped keep young players inspired.
League play is well underway, with an open league running Tuesdays and Thursdays, a junior league on Wednesdays, and the club’s Super League every Monday.
