The École Plamondon Hawks senior boys’ volleyball team has claimed the 2025 School Sport Alberta 1A provincial championship, finishing an outstanding season with a dominant run in Calgary on the final weekend of November.

Back-to-Back Success for the Hawks

The championship win marks the team’s second 1A provincial title in four seasons, adding to a growing legacy for the Plamondon programme. The boys entered provincials as the top-ranked team out of 12 and lived up to that billing, going undefeated and securing the gold medal with a straight-set victory over St. Thomas More of Fairview.

The win came just one week after the Hawks captured NEASAA zone gold on home court in Plamondon.

Although the team felt nervous early and faced a challenging opening match, they quickly settled in and controlled the rest of the tournament. Their on-court performance was matched by strong sportsmanship, earning them widespread praise from opponents, parents, and tournament hosts.

As a result, the Hawks were recognized with an SSA ‘Set the Bar’ Sportsmanship Award, highlighting the team’s composure, respect, and leadership throughout the event.

A Special Season for Graduates

This year’s title run held added meaning, with three Grade 12 players—Layne Paul, Terrance Lindskog, and Kyle Maheden—finishing their high school volleyball careers with a provincial championship. All three have been part of the programme since junior high, forming the core of a close-knit team.

Hawks Girls Earn Provincial Berth

The École Plamondon senior girls’ team also had a strong season, earning a spot at provincials in Manning after a successful showing at NEASAA zones.

The girls placed 11th overall, navigating a highly competitive 1A field marked by numerous upsets against initial rankings. Their most significant highlight was a hard-fought pool-play win over the Hines Creek Tigers, who went on to finish with the silver medal. Two of their four losses came against the eventual gold and bronze medallists, leaving the team feeling confident in their overall performance. They closed the tournament with a convincing win over Covenant Canadian of Neerlandia.

Team captain Nyah Etim received one of the tournament’s SSA ‘Set the Bar’ Sportsmanship Awards, after multiple nominations for her leadership and respectful play.
