A new family doctor is on the ground in St. Paul, bringing a welcome boost to healthcare access for residents across the region.

A Strengthened Healthcare Team

Dr. Akinwumi Awotunde is now practising at the St. Therese – St. Paul Healthcare Centre and Living Hope Medical Clinic. His work spans the local emergency department, inpatient and outpatient services, continuing care, and family medicine in the community.

Local leaders say his arrival comes at a critical time.

“We are very pleased to welcome Dr. Awotunde to St. Paul,” said Scott Cyr, MLA for Bonnyville–Cold Lake–St. Paul. “His arrival strengthens our local healthcare system at a time when families need timely and reliable access to care. I’m grateful for his commitment to our community and the vital support he will bring to patients across the region.”

International Training, Local Impact

Dr. Awotunde completed his medical training in Ukraine and finished his residency in Nigeria, where he was born and raised. He has relocated to St. Paul with his wife and two children.

“We are excited to have Dr. Awotunde join the local healthcare team in St. Paul,” said Dr. Jane Ojedokun, Zone Medical Director for AHS North Zone. “His arrival helps ensure patients in St. Paul and area receive the highest standard of care when they need it.”

Recruiting for Rural Care

Dr. Awotunde’s arrival is part of Alberta Health Services’ ongoing physician recruitment strategy. In the North Zone, three dedicated physician resource planners are working to bring both international and domestic doctors to rural communities. They collaborate closely with the Rural Health Professionals Action Plan and local attraction and retention committees to help fill long-standing gaps in care.

St. Paul now has another trusted physician ready to support families close to home.
