Lac La Biche Water Tower Revitalization Nears Completion

Lac La Biche’s landmark water tower is entering the final stages of its revitalization, with new lighting scheduled for installation shortly and fresh lettering planned for spring.

A Season of Restoration

Work on the tower began on 21 July under a $625,000 project budget, carrying through the summer and into the fall. The effort focused on removing old lead-based paint, repairing surfaces and structure, and recoating the upper sections.
Built in 1967, the tower no longer stores water but remains a well-known feature of the community skyline.

Lighting and Lettering on the Way

The upcoming lighting will be mounted on four ground-based poles surrounding the tower rather than on the structure itself. Once the materials arrive, installation is expected to move quickly.
The lettering, planned for spring, will use enamel letters in the traditional green “LAC LA BICHE” style. Cold temperatures prevent the work from happening sooner, and the enamel installation method will provide a cleaner look and longer-lasting durability compared to paint.

Staying on Track Despite Weather

The project remained largely on schedule, although wind and rain created occasional setbacks. Moisture prevented painting, and high winds posed safety concerns at upper heights. To keep work moving safely, the contractor brought in a crane for the top sections.

A Landmark Preserved

The water tower has long been a source of local pride, and community input strongly supported refurbishing it rather than removing it. Residents view the tower as a defining symbol of Lac La Biche — a piece of local history worth maintaining.

With only the finishing touches left, the refreshed water tower will soon stand renewed, ready to continue its role as a familiar and meaningful part of the community.
