Doug Bassett Honoured with Baseball Alberta’s 2025 President’s Award

Doug “The Sportshound” Bassett has spent more than thirty five years shaping baseball in Alberta, and now his lifelong commitment has been recognised with Baseball Alberta’s 2025 President’s Award.

A Leader Who Built the Game from the Ground Up

The President’s Award is given each year to a board member selected by the President for outstanding service and long-term leadership. Bassett’s impact across the sport makes him a natural choice.

As the long-serving Zone 7 Director, he played a central role in the growth and stability of baseball throughout northeastern Alberta, supporting athletes, volunteers, and local associations in the Lakeland region, Elk Point, and the Lakeland League.

Doug’s dedication to youth baseball extended far beyond board duties. In Elk Point he was an avid Minor Ball volunteer and the driving force behind the construction of an U18 regulation field. That field would later be named Bassett Field, honouring the years he poured into building opportunities for young players.

A Legacy On and Off the Field

While his leadership strengthened the sport across the province, many in the Lakeland also know Doug as “The Sportshound,” a longtime writer for Lakeland Connect whose coverage has highlighted generations of local athletes.

As he completes his final year on the Baseball Alberta Board, his influence will continue to shape the game and the communities that play it.

And he’s my dad.
