Bonnyville RCMP Warns Drivers as Ice Creates Dangerous Roads
The Bonnyville RCMP is urging motorists to slow down and stay alert as icy roads and shifting winter weather make driving conditions hazardous across the region. Snow, freezing rain, and black ice are reducing visibility, extending stopping distances, and increasing the risk of collisions.
How to stay safe on icy roads
▪️ Slow down to maintain control and give yourself more time to react
▪️ Leave extra space between you and the vehicle ahead
▪️ Avoid sudden braking or sharp steering
▪️ Install proper winter tyres for better grip
▪️ Clear all windows and lights before driving
▪️ Watch for black ice on bridges, overpasses, and shaded stretches
If you end up in a collision or slide
▪️ Stay calm and avoid sudden movements
▪️ If safe to do so, move your vehicle out of traffic
▪️ Turn on hazard lights
▪️ Check for injuries
▪️ Call 911 if anyone is injured, if there is major damage, or if traffic is blocked
▪️ For minor collisions, move to the shoulder to prevent secondary crashes
▪️ Stay inside your vehicle if conditions outside are dangerous
▪️ Exchange details and take photos if safe
The RCMP reminds all drivers to use caution, prepare for changing conditions, and put safety first on winter roads.
