Cold Lake Hospital temporarily suspends maternity services due to OB/GYN shortage

Last Updated: November 10, 2025By

Alberta Health Services (AHS) has announced a temporary suspension of all obstetrical services at the Cold Lake Healthcare Centre beginning Sunday, November 9, 2025, due to a shortage of obstetrician-gynecologists (OB/GYNs).

The disruption, which includes c-sections, is expected to last until January 5, 2026, unless temporary physician coverage is secured earlier.

Expectant mothers urged to plan ahead

AHS says it is working to ensure all expectant mothers have the support they need during this period, including planning for where they can safely deliver their babies.

“Maternity patients are still encouraged to present to the Cold Lake hospital for assessment,” reads the AHS memorandum. “EMS remains available to transfer any patients requiring urgent c-sections to surrounding healthcare facilities.”

Ongoing recruitment efforts

Recruitment is underway to bring an obstetrician-gynecologist to Cold Lake, and AHS says the disruption may be lifted if coverage is found.

“We understand this situation is not ideal for expectant mothers and apologise for any stress this may cause,” the statement continues. “The health and safety of Albertans remains our top priority, and we are committed to supporting women’s health and ensuring necessary care is available in Cold Lake.”

Community and regional support

AHS expressed appreciation for the assistance of surrounding healthcare centres and medical staff who are helping ensure continuity of care for local families.

“We are thankful for the support of surrounding healthcare centres and medical staff and would like to thank the community for their patience and understanding during this time.”

The temporary service disruption follows similar staffing challenges seen in rural Alberta over the past year as AHS continues to recruit and retain healthcare professionals in smaller communities.
