St. Paul RCMP Warn of Rise in Vehicle Thefts, Urge Residents to Secure Keys
St. Paul RCMP are warning residents to lock up after a recent spike in vehicle thefts across the community — many of which involved vehicles left running or with keys inside.
Police say thieves are taking advantage of easy opportunities, with some vehicles stolen right from driveways or garages.
“Auto thieves often use stolen vehicles to commit additional crimes,” said Staff Sergeant Luke Halvorson. “While we remain committed to catching those responsible, we’re asking citizens to do their part by keeping their keys secure and never leaving them inside their vehicles.”
How to protect your vehicle:
-
Never leave your keys inside, even if parked in your garage or driveway.
-
Store keys out of sight and away from doors or windows.
-
Use a Faraday pouch for keyless entry systems.
-
Always lock your vehicle and remove valuables.
-
Consider an anti-theft device.
-
Report suspicious activity immediately.
RCMP remind residents that vehicle thefts often lead to other crimes such as break-ins, fuel theft, and dangerous driving.
Anyone with information is asked to contact St. Paul RCMP at 780-645-8888 or 310-RCMP (7267). In an emergency, call 911. To report online, visit https://ocre-sielc.rcmp-grc.gc.ca, or to remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
