Stepping Stones Shines a Light on Family Violence Prevention Month
Each November, Family Violence Prevention Month encourages communities across Canada to take a stand against abuse in all its forms. Here in the Lakeland, Stepping Stones Crisis Society continues to lead the charge—offering safety, support, and a path forward for those affected by family violence.
Family Violence Remains a Widespread Issue
According to Statistics Canada, more than 139,000 Canadians were victims of police-reported family violence in 2023. Women and girls accounted for roughly two-thirds of those cases.
Family violence is often not a single event but part of a continuing cycle that escalates over time—and can repeat across generations unless there’s intervention.
“Our role is to be that intervention point,” said Melissa Francis, CEO of Stepping Stones Crisis Society. “When one person speaks up, it creates a ripple effect that can change everything. Family violence thrives in silence, but when we act, listen, believe, and support, we open the door to safety, healing, and hope.”
How the Community Can Help
This November, Stepping Stones is sharing a clear message: You Can Help.
▪️ Recognize the signs. Abuse can include physical harm, emotional manipulation, harassment, neglect, and control. Many victims never report what’s happening.
▪️ Know where to turn. Stepping Stones provides confidential counselling, safe referrals, and educational workshops to help families rebuild.
▪️ Speak up. If you suspect someone is in danger, you can call the 24-hour helpline at 780-594-3353, contact authorities, or reach out to trusted community supports.
▪️ Stop the cycle. Taking action today helps create a safer future for women and children.
Candlelight Vigil and Walk of Remembrance
The community is invited to a Candlelight Vigil and Walk of Remembrance on Saturday, November 1, from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. at Stepping Stones’ new facility, 5305 47 Street, Cold Lake. The event will honour victims and survivors of family violence.
For those unable to attend, Stepping Stones encourages residents to place a lit candle in their window that evening in a shared show of remembrance and solidarity.
If you or someone you know is experiencing family or intimate-partner violence, reach out to Stepping Stones Crisis Society at 780-594-5095 or visit SteppingStonesSociety.ca.
Together, the Lakeland can help end the silence and stop the cycle.
