Cold Lake Renews Support for Iron Horse Trail Through 2027

Last Updated: October 21, 2025By

The City of Cold Lake will continue its long-standing partnership with the Riverland Recreational Trail Society (RRTS), approving an annual grant of $4,256 from 2025 to 2027 to help maintain the Iron Horse Trail.

Council made the decision at its October 14 meeting, following a presentation by Marianne Janke of RRTS at a previous session on September 23. Janke outlined the society’s recent trail improvements, including new signage, outhouse replacements, and staging area development plans, as well as ongoing efforts to secure federal and provincial grants for further upgrades.

Mayor Craig Copeland said the funding reflects the council’s recognition of the trail’s importance to the region.

The Iron Horse Trail stretches across the Lakeland region and draws thousands of recreational users each year, from hikers and cyclists in summer to snowmobilers and ATV riders in winter. With the City’s renewed support, RRTS plans to maintain and enhance local sections of the trail, including potential new connections to the Cold Lake waterfront.

Council unanimously approved the grant, marking more than a decade of collaboration between RRTS and Muni-Corr partners across northeastern Alberta.
