Phil Kushnir: A Steady Voice on Bonnyville Town Council Focused on Community and Connection
Bonnyville Town Councillor Phil Kushnir says serving his hometown has been one of the greatest honours of his life. Born and raised in the Lakeland, Kushnir’s family roots in the community run deep — his grandparents homesteaded north of the Beaver River in the 1930s, and his father’s legacy is commemorated at the Peter Kushnir Ballpark east of the C2.
“Bonnyville has always been home,” Kushnir says. “Even when my family moved away, we always came back — for holidays, summers, and time with family. In 1993, I came back for good, and I’m proud to continue serving this community.”
Community-Minded Leadership
Known for being approachable, honest, and easy to talk to, Kushnir has earned a reputation as a councillor who listens. He describes himself as “community-minded first” and says collaboration is key to effective local government.
“I’ve always believed that council works best when we work together,” he says. “My job is to listen, bring forward good ideas — whether they’re mine or someone else’s — and keep things moving forward for the people who live here.”
Over the past term, Kushnir has been part of several major initiatives, including:
- Recycling pickup starting in 2026 with no extra charge for residents.
- Downtown Revitalization Study completed, with rollout planned for Spring 2026.
- Lakeshore Drive Master Plan, with the first phase scheduled to finish by the end of this year.
- Ongoing advocacy for the Bonnyville Aquatic Centre, recently resubmitted for approval.
- Incentives to attract businesses and developers, supporting both commercial and residential growth.
- Community beautification projects, including ongoing funding for Christmas lights along the Jessie Lake Trail.
Kushnir Cares — A Commitment to Community Life
A familiar face at local fundraisers and community events, Kushnir says these gatherings are one of the best parts of small-town life. He often attends events like the Festival of Trees, Winter Fun Day, Date Night in the Park, and Canada Day, where he volunteers his time and shows support for local groups.
“These events bring people together,” he explains. “They build connection, pride, and belonging — that’s what makes Bonnyville special.”
That spirit of connection is reflected in one of Kushnir’s key guiding principles: Strong Support for Families and Community Life. It’s a pillar that also aligns with his campaign theme, Kushnir Cares — a simple phrase that captures his belief that local leadership should be rooted in care, accountability, and community.
Focused on What Matters
In addition to community engagement, Kushnir says responsible spending and transparency remain top priorities.
“I care about how tax dollars are spent,” he says. “Residents deserve to know their money is being used wisely — no waste, no fluff. It’s about being responsible and delivering value.”
His other priorities include supporting small business, maintaining vital infrastructure, and ensuring Bonnyville remains an affordable and welcoming community for families, seniors, and newcomers alike.
A Generational Leader for Bonnyville’s Future
Kushnir’s approach to leadership is grounded in legacy — not just his family’s long history in Bonnyville, but in the belief that today’s decisions shape the town’s future.
“We’re building for the next generation,” he says. “Whether it’s safer roads, a better downtown, or more opportunities for families, it all comes down to making Bonnyville the best place it can be — now and for years to come.”
Election Day in Bonnyville is October 20.
