Meet the Candidate: Greg Sawchuk for Reeve of the MD of Bonnyville
Greg Sawchuk, who served as Reeve of the Municipal District of Bonnyville from 2017 to 2021, is once again putting his name forward in the upcoming election. The retired RCAF Flight Engineer, rancher, and longtime community volunteer says his previous experience at the council table and his strong ties to the region are what inspired him to return.
From Service to Local Politics
Sawchuk spent a large part of his career in the Royal Canadian Air Force, flying on search and rescue helicopters before retiring back home. Since then, he and his family have operated Muriel Creek Cattle Co. and the Ranch House, all while raising six children.
He has also been active on local boards and in community groups. For a decade, Sawchuk has sat on the Lakeland Co-op board and volunteered through 4-H, Arcathoes, and other organizations. “Community has always been a big part of my life,” he reflected in a recent interview.
That commitment eventually led him into politics. In 2017, Sawchuk was elected Reeve of the MD of Bonnyville, a role he held until 2021.
Record as Reeve
Looking back on his first term, Sawchuk points to several initiatives he is proud of. Under his leadership, council kept residential tax rates steady and became the first rural municipality in Alberta to offer a small business tax class. Three tax rate cuts were introduced during that period.
Sawchuk also highlights work on the Intermunicipal Collaboration Framework, which secured agreements with neighbouring municipalities. One of the biggest files was the longstanding ID 349 tax dispute. Sawchuk and council negotiated with the province to absorb ID 349 into the MD, ensuring the tax base stayed in the region.
Other council decisions during his tenure included building firehalls in Ardmore and Fort Kent, constructing outdoor arenas in Ardmore and Cherry Grove, purchasing a new headquarters for the Bonnyville Regional Fire Authority, and implementing federally funded improvements at Kinosoo Ridge. Sawchuk notes he also reduced the personal pay of the Reeve position by 30% during his term.
Why Run Again?
After leaving office in 2021, Sawchuk says he enjoyed retirement but was encouraged by residents to return. “I wasn’t planning on coming back,” he admitted during the interview. “But people started reaching out, asking if I would consider it again. I think it’s important to listen when the community speaks.”
He explained that his decision stems from both experience and a belief in the value of continuity. “There’s always projects that take time, and you want to see them through,” he said.
Priorities for the Future
If elected, Sawchuk says his focus will be on maintaining fiscal responsibility, supporting growth, and ensuring residents continue to see value in their local government. He emphasizes the importance of collaboration with other municipalities and the province in order to keep tax dollars working locally.
Sawchuk also points to the importance of recreational and community facilities. “Things like firehalls, arenas, and Kinosoo Ridge aren’t just about infrastructure. They’re about quality of life for families,” he said.
A Familiar Face in the MD
For voters, Sawchuk’s name carries the weight of experience. His background spans military service, ranching, business, and local government, and he frames his candidacy around the themes of leadership, integrity, and time.
“I know the challenges that come with this role, but I also know the rewards of working with people to make our region better,” he said.
The MD of Bonnyville election is set for October, with advanced polls opening on October 9.
