Alberta RCMP Shares Tips to Prevent Seasonal Property Crime

Last Updated: October 8, 2025By

As temperatures drop, property crime tends to rise

With colder weather settling in, the Alberta RCMP is reminding residents to take extra precautions to protect their seasonal and rural properties. Fewer people in recreational and farming areas can make them prime targets for thieves looking for easy opportunities.

Keep it locked and out of sight
RCMP advises storing off-road vehicles, ATVs, and snowmobiles in locked garages, sheds, or storage units—and always keeping them out of sight. Empty gas tanks, block vehicles with fencing or wheel clamps, and secure keys in a separate location to make theft more difficult.

Safeguard tools and equipment
Farmers and rural landowners should lock up machinery, use wheel clamps, or remove batteries when equipment is not in use. Keeping a log of serial numbers, adding identifiable markings such as your postal code on trailers, and storing keys securely can help police recover stolen property.

Don’t leave valuables behind
When closing up cabins or seasonal properties for the winter, take home all valuables like electronics and power tools. If items must stay behind, ensure they’re locked up and consider posting signage noting that valuables have been removed.

Add extra layers of security
The RCMP also recommends motion lights, security cameras, and GPS trackers for high-value equipment. Doors, windows, and outbuildings should be checked and secured before leaving.
