Power Up North Set to Spark Entrepreneurship in Northern Alberta
St. Paul is set to become the hub of entrepreneurial energy this fall, as Community Futures St. Paul–Smoky Lake prepares to host the annual Power Up North Conference. Executive Director Penny Fox says her team is ready to welcome business leaders, innovators, and dreamers to Portage College on October 7 and 8.
“This year it’s our turn to host,” Fox said. “Every four years it comes back to our Community Futures. And we’re ready. Kind of like the Olympics.”
The two-day conference is designed to equip entrepreneurs with the tools, insights, and inspiration they need to grow their ventures in Alberta’s northeast. From keynote speakers to breakout sessions, the schedule promises a blend of learning and networking opportunities.
“Power Up North is about making sure our local entrepreneurs know they don’t have to do it alone,” Fox explained. “They get access to experts, mentors, and resources right here in the Lakeland.”
Entrepreneurship: WOW! What a Journey
Power Up North: The Entrepreneurs Conference gives Alberta entrepreneurs the opportunity to network, learn, engage, and get inspired alongside other business owners and startups. The event offers a wide range of keynote speakers, activities, and workshops for all ages, stages, and phases of business.
Fox says the event’s timing feels right. “It’s fall — we had frost this morning — and that means it’s Power Up North season,” she laughed. “This is when people are ready to refocus and recharge.”
The conference kicks off October 7 with Brews & Chews, a networking night where attendees can mingle with Alberta’s vibrant community of business owners and startups. The following day, October 8, will feature a full slate of presentations and learning opportunities facilitated by knowledgeable industry professionals, capped by featured speakers from across the province.

“We know how resilient our entrepreneurs are,” Fox said. “But resilience doesn’t mean doing it all by yourself. These conferences remind us that collaboration and fresh ideas are what keep small towns thriving.”
Alongside the professional development, Power Up North also celebrates the entrepreneurial spirit unique to the region. Attendees will hear stories from local business owners and have opportunities to share their own journeys.
Fox is hopeful the event will leave a lasting impact. “We want people walking away saying, ‘I can do this. I’ve got new ideas, I’ve got support, and I’m excited about the future.’ That’s what Power Up North is all about.”
